Students working on these projects delved into areas such as the regulation of Security Token Offerings, dispute settlement mechanisms in bi-regional, regional, and bilateral trade agreements, the WTO dispute settlement system, trade and environment/sustainable development, public policies for the promotion and facilitation of trade in Latin America, and agribusiness and international arbitration.
The clinic provided a platform for in-depth research and analysis, offering valuable insights into the complexities and challenges within the global trade landscape. Stay tuned for the final reports from this clinic!
Thinking back to the experience I had during the Tradelab program, I’ve found that this is one of the most enriching experiences that I ever had during my undergraduate law program at the Universidad de los Andes. This experience was enriching for two main reasons:
The first reason is because of the possibility to experience one-on-one communication with clients. This is a very important skill that most lawyers don’t get to learn until they are working. As students, speaking with clients directly is a rare experience and, in the Tradelab clinic, we were not only able to engage in this interaction, but were guided by our supervisor, who helped us keep the conversation on the right track.
The second reason I found Tradelab a very enriching experience is that it helped us develop our teamwork skills. We realized very early on that if we weren’t in sync, our final output was not going to be the best one possible.
I would like to recommend that every student should participate in this. It is a great learning experience, and helps students in different legal areas such as international economical law, contracts law, tax law and others.
A transformative milestone unfolded as four TradeLab students actively participated in the 2023 WTO Public Forum. Maathangi Hariharan from the Graduate Institute, Joan Lim from Georgetown University, Hugh Jones from Queen’s University, and Nicole Isis de Ayub from the University of Sao Paulo formed a dynamic panel titled “Empowering the Youth & Marginalized: Green Trade for Development.” Dr. Nicolas Lamp, a Professor at Queen’s University, moderated the insightful discussion.
The panel showcased the students’ in-depth exploration of the pivotal role of inclusive trade policies in advancing green trade practices and empowering marginalized communities. Drawing on tangible projects conducted under the TradeLab framework, our students aimed to inspire stakeholders to adopt trade policies that promote equity and sustainability within the multilateral trading system.
Our 10th Anniversary Celebration, held on September 13th at the WTO Public Forum was well attended by TradeLab supervisors, students, beneficiaries, and supporters. The TradeLab organization quintessentially embodies this year’s Public Forum theme—“It is time for action.” There is no better action for promoting fair and equitable international trade than the hands-on work that our students are doing, globally, each semester.
